ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD & RECOVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT REACH OUT TO FAMILIES DISPLACED BY HURRICANE HARVEY TO ENROLL SCHOOL

August 31, 2017

NEW ORLEANS  Aug. 31, 2017 – Today, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) and Recovery School District (RSD) announced that the public schools of New Orleans have opened enrollment opportunities for any students displaced by Hurricane Harvey. New Orleans educators know the difficulty of ensuring normalcy and educational continuity for children in the face of such a devastating natural disaster.

Officials and school leaders across the city have pledged to quickly enroll students affected by the storm and get them back into school.  RSD and OPSB are committed to keeping siblings together and enrolling evacuees in schools where their host families are enrolled where possible.  New Orleans’ public schools offer a wealth of educational opportunities along with staff prepared to deal with the unique challenges faced by evacuating students.

“The most important thing, especially for young people, is to get them back into a routine, to get back to what is a new normal,” said OPSB Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lewis Henderson, Jr. “That means school. So we are working to enroll displaced families who are now in New Orleans, keeping them together with their siblings and other family at a new school. That way they can feel welcome and safe after going through what was likely a terrible ordeal.”
